The Union
Old Salt Co-op embarked on an ambitious endeavor to breathe new life into Bert and Ernie's, a cherished establishment in Helena, MT. This transformative project sought to create a vibrant hub, encompassing a restaurant, butcher shop, market, and bar—all while honoring the building's rich past. Constructed in 1940, the structure has stood the test of time, and the owners were resolute in their commitment to preserve its historic charm. This meant working closely with a dedicated team to ensure that the renovation would skillfully integrate modern functionality while maintaining the original elements that give the building its unique character.
The design features unique lighting fixtures that blend vintage aesthetics with contemporary flair, creating an inviting atmosphere throughout the space. Thoughtfully placed pendant lights illuminate key areas, enhancing the overall ambiance while highlighting the building's architectural details. Natural light floods the interior through large windows, creating a bright and airy environment that connects patrons to the outside world.
The preserved natural wood floors add warmth and authenticity, showcasing the building's history while providing a durable and stylish foundation for the various spaces. The color scheme is carefully curated, featuring inviting hues that evoke a sense of comfort and nostalgia, while also appealing to modern sensibilities. Earthy tones and rich accents create a welcoming environment that encourages guests to linger and enjoy their experience.
In addition to the restaurant and bar areas, the butcher shop and market are designed with functionality in mind, featuring open layouts that invite exploration. Shelving and display cases showcase local products and artisanal goods, further enhancing the community-focused ethos of the establishment.
